Maple Leafs sign Brad Boyes

TORONTO, April 2 (UPI) -- The Toronto Maple Leafs signed center Brad Boyes, their first-round pick in the 2000 draft, to a three-year contract Tuesday.

Boyes, who turns 20 on April 17, has had a sensational junior career with Erie of the Ontario Hockey League, where he recorded 36 goals and 41 assists in just 47 games this season.

He also leads the OHL in playoff scoring this season with 14 points in five games.

The 6-0, 181-pound Boyes was ranked fifth among prospects by NHL Central Scouting at the time he was drafted. He also was voted top playmaker, smartest player and best stickhandler in the Western Conference in a poll of OHL coaches.

The Ontario native was a member of Canada's silver medal-winning team at the 2002 World Junior Hockey Championships.
