Phoenix signs rugged Russian

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., March 29 (UPI) -- Seemingly pleased by his physical contributions, the Phoenix Coyotes signed left wing Andrei Nazarov to a three-year contract on Friday.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Nazarov, who was acquired from the Boston Bruins on Jan. 25 for a fifth-round pick in the 2002 draft, has collected four goals, six points and 44 penalty minutes in 23 games with the Coyotes.

The 6-5, 235-pound Russian ranks third in the NHL in penalty minutes and has tallied more than 200 for the third time in his career.

Drafted by the San Jose Sharks with the 10th overall pick in 1992, Nazarov has registered 47 goals, 115 points and 1,136 penalty minutes in 470 career games for San Jose, Tampa Bay, Calgary, Anaheim, Boston and Phoenix.
