MESA, Ariz., March 26 (UPI) -- Miguel Tejada belted a two-run homer and knocked in three runs Tuesday as the Oakland Athletics outslugged the Chicago Cubs, 13-11.
In the thin air, the teams combined for five homers and 35 hits.
Tejada went three for four, including his homer that highlighted a seven-run eighth inning. Eric Byrnes smacked a solo shot and Terrence Long drove in two runs for Oakland, which also scored five times in the third inning.
Oakland starter Erik Hiljus was ripped for seven runs and 12 hits in 4 2/3 innings. It also was a rough afternoon for closer Billy Koch, who gave up three runs and four hits in one inning.
Cubs starter Jason Bere lasted just 2 2/3 innings, allowing five runs and five hits.
