St. Louis 5, NY Mets 4

JUPITER, Fla., March 22 (UPI) -- Mike Coolbaugh hit a two-run homer off Kane Davis in the bottom of the eighth inning Friday night as the St. Louis Cardinals edged the New York Mets, 5-4.

Eduardo Perez also homered for the Cardinals, who scored three runs in the first inning before giving up a run in the fifth and two in the sixth.

Steve Kline -- the fourth of five pitchers for St. Louis -- picked up the win after striking out a pair during a scoreless eighth. Jason Isringhausen recorded the save despite allowing a solo homer to Mark Johnson in the ninth.

Cards starter Matt Morris was effective, yielding one run and two hits with two walks and four strikeouts over five innings.

Al Leiter started for the Mets and gave up three runs and six hits while walking one and striking out five in 5 1/3 frames.

Johnson and Mo Vaughn each hit their third homers of the spring for New York.
