Detroit 3, Florida 1 (5 inn., rain)

LAKELAND, Fla., March 21 (UPI) -- Wendell Magee, Jose Macias and Dmitri Young homered and Mark Redman tossed five strong innings Thursday as the Detroit Tigers posted a 3-1 triumph over the Florida Marlins in a game shortened to five innings by rain.

Young continues to hammer the ball in his first spring with the Tigers. The homer was his third of the exhibition season while both Macias and Magee hit their second. Redman, who allowed five hits and two walks, improved to 4-0 this spring.

Florida starter Ryan Dempster allowed three runs and six hits in five innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out five but fell to 0-3 this spring.

Luis Castillo homered for the lone Florida run.

The game was delayed 30 minutes before it was called.
