TAMPA, Fla., March 20 (UPI) -- David Wells pitched five scoreless innings and Derek Jeter hit his first home run of the spring as the New York Yankees defeated the Cincinnati Reds, 5-3, in
Grapefruit League action Tuesday night.
Jeter belted an opposite-field solo homer off Jose Acevedo in the third inning to give New York the lead. Ken Griffey Jr. tied the game with an RBI single in the sixth.
Losing pitcher Scott Williamson allowed four runs in 2/3 inning, surrendering two hits and walking three. Gerald Williams had a two-run single and Alfonso Soriano and Ron Coomer added RBI singles.
Cincinnati's Juan Encarnacion went 2-for-3 and Raul Gonzalez added an RBI triple.
Wells allowed just two hits and struck out four while throwing 64 pitches over five innings. Steve Karsay got the win despite allowing a run on three hits over two innings, striking out four. Mariano Rivera pitched a perfect ninth for the save.
