Edmonton 4, Washington 1

EDMONTON, Alberta, March 17 (UPI) -- Tommy Salo stopped 27 shots and Anson Carter scored a pair of power-play goals in the first period Saturday night as the Edmonton Oilers snapped a four-game home winless streak with a 4-1 victory over the Washington Capitals.

Edmonton had been 0-2-2 at Skyreach Centre since Jan. 26. In between home wins, Salo and the Swedish Olympic team were stunned by Belarus in the quarterfinals at Salt Lake City. The carryover was noticeable as Salo lost two of his first three post-Olympic starts.

But Salo has won consecutive starts for the first time since Nov. 13-16. He was hardly tested but came up with a couple of key saves to protect a two-goal lead after Washington pulled goaltender Craig Billington for an extra attacker.

Ethan Moreau added an empty-netter just before the final buzzer to seal the win.

Jaromir Jagr scored the lone goal for the Capitals, who have lost three straight and fell to 0-2 on an eight-game road trip.
