Big 12 Conference Tournament Roundup

KANSAS CITY, Mo., March 9 (UPI) -- Freshman Aaron Miles scored 15 points and matched a tournament record with 15 assists Saturday to help top-ranked Kansas dominate from start to finish for a 90-50 rout of Texas Tech in the Big 12 semifinals.

Kansas (29-2) won its 16th straight game and will face Oklahoma in Sunday's championship. The Sooners waltzed past Texas in their semifinal meeting, 67-51.

The Jayhawks had no trouble with the Red Raiders, who were playing their third game in as many days.

Miles had five points and a pair of assists as Kansas bolted out to a 14-5 lead. The onslaught continued as Gooden made a layup and freshman Keith Langford made a three-pointer for a 25-9 lead with 12:26 left.

A 13-0 run capped by a three-pointer by Kirk Hinrich gave the Jayhawks a 40-13 lead with just under five minutes left. Kansas held a 51-22 lead at halftime.

Pawel Storozynski scored 14 points to lead Texas Tech, which shot just 27 percent.

"Needless to say, we played well," Kansas Coach Roy Williams said. "This was Tech's third game in the past three days and I think the fatigue factor just caught up with them."

"We were beaten by a much better team and we were tired from the beginning," Texas Tech Coach Bob Knight said. "We're not a real strong team when it comes to stamina and everything caught up with us."

The 40-point margin was the largest margin of victory in a Big 12 tournament game.

Drew Gooden also had a monster game with 16 points and 21 rebounds while Kirk Hinrich led the Jayhawks with 17 points. Kansas held a 50-18 advantage in points in the paint.

Miles had 10 assists after halftime and also made 5-of-7 shots. The freshman guard has flourished in Kansas' three-guard system with Hinrich and Jeff Boschee.

"Aaron's focus definitely has gotten better but he still has a long way to go," Williams said. "His decision making has gotten better and better."

Nick Collison also had a dominant effort, making seven of eight shots for 14 points, six rebounds and five blocks. Collison also helped contain Red Raiders center Andy Ellis, who missed all six shots and did not score.

The Red Raiders' Andre Emmett, who had 23 points and 14 rebounds in a quarterfinal victory over Oklahoma State, also did not score as he missed all nine shots and grabbed just four rebounds.

"They're very good defensively," Knight said. "If I were to try to pinpoint one thing, it's that you become concerned about stopping the break and then you're concerned about defending the post play.

"Then you forget about the emphasis that you have to put on movement and sharpness to get open because they play so well."

Oklahoma's victory was keyed by Aaron McGhee, who collected 16 points and 15 rebounds. Oklahoma (26-4) won its sixth straight game.

Jason Detrick did all the scoring as the Sooners used a 7-1 run to close the first half for a 38-23 halftime lead. Oklahoma did most of its damage from beyond the arc, hitting eight of 15 in the opening 20 minutes.

Detrick and Ebi Ere each netted 15 points for Oklahoma, which has beaten Texas seven straight times. The contest was a rematch of last year's title game, in which the Sooners posted an 80-62 victory.
