Montreal 5, Boston 3

MONTREAL, March 6 (UPI) -- Joe Juneau scored twice in the first 53 seconds Wednesday night and Jeff Hackett made a spectacular save midway through the third period despite a shoulder injury as the Montreal Canadiens downed the Boston Bruins, 5-3.

Sergei Berezin and Yanic Perreault scored second-period goals for the Canadiens, who bounced back after squandering an early two-goal lead.

The victory gave the Canadiens 65 points and moved them into a tie with the New York Rangers for the eighth and final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference.

Martin Lapointe had a goal and an assist for Boston, which has lost four straight games and is winless in its last five (0-4-1).

Hackett extended Boston's misery while working through some pain of his own. The backup goalie injured his shoulder when he was involved in a pileup in front of the Montreal goal with 11:30 left.

Martin Lapointe tried to poke the puck past Hackett, but the goalie swept his left hand back across the goal and deflected the puck across the goal line, off the post and out of harm's way to keep the score at 4-3.

Hackett was forced to leave the game and the preliminary diagnosis was a dislocated left shoulder, the same injury that forced him to miss 20 games earlier this season.

Jose Theodore relieved and preserved the win when Sean O'Donnell missed an open net with 2:37 left.

Richard Zednik added an insurance goal on the power play with 2:23 left.

A mistake by Boston goaltender Byron Dafoe caused the early deficit.

Dafoe failed to cleanly clear the puck after the Canadiens dumped the puck into the Boston zone. Jan Bulis chased down the puck and fed Juneau, who caught the goalie out of position just 18 seconds into the contest.

Juneau quickly made it 2-0, taking a short pass from Andreas Dackell and putting a low shot under the glove of Dafoe for his sixth of the season.
