CHICAGO, March 1 (UPI) -- The Chicago Bulls on Friday waived veteran guard Greg Anthony, who became a free agent and can join a team headed to the playoffs.

Anthony was signed through next season, but reached a financial settlement with the Bulls.

Chicago has been using recently acquired Travis Best and promising youngster A.J. Guyton at point guard. Anthony had missed some time with injuries but was not expected to play much for the remainder of the season.

"Greg asked to be waived before the March 1 deadline for him to be eligible to sign with a playoff contender," Bulls vice president Jerry Krause said. "We were able to reach an amicable agreement on his contract for next year and thus, accommodate him."

The 6-1 Anthony was averaging 8.4 points and a team-leading 5.6 assists in 36 games this season, his 11th in the NBA and first with the Bulls. He was acquired from Portland for a draft pick.

"We hate to lose him as a player and person, but with Travis Best and A.J. Guyton playing well and Jamal Crawford due back in the next few days, we feel comfortable at the guard position," Krause said.
