Los Angeles 2, Carolina 1

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Felix Potvin picked the right time to live up to his nickname.

After Kelly Buchberger scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period, Potvin helped preserve the lead as the Los Angeles Kings posted a 2-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes.

Buchberger scored his fifth goal of the season and 100th career 3:33 into the third, snapping a 1-1 tie. But it was Potvin who turned out to be the biggest story.

Nicknamed "The Cat" for his quickness, Potvin made just five saves in the third period. But his biggest came with just over seven minutes remaining, when he lunged to his right and stuck his stick across the ice to stop veteran Ron Francis' shot.

Potvin finished with 17 saves and also received some help later in third as Jeff O'Neill rang a shot off the crossbar with under seven minutes to play.

Mathieu Schneider scored in the first period for the Kings, who won for the eighth time in their last 11 games.

Shane Willis netted a power-play goal in the second period for Carolina, which was playing the opener of an eight-game road trip.
