Rangers sign Pat Borders

ARLINGTON, Texas, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- The Texas Rangers announced Saturday they had signed veteran catcher Pat Borders, a former World Series Most Valuable Player, to a minor league contract.

Borders also received an invitation to spring training, where he will compete for a roster spot with Bill Haselman behind perennial All-Star Ivan Rodriguez.

Borders, 38, spent most of the 2001 season in the minor leagues of the Tampa Bay and Seattle organizations. He played in five games for the Mariners, batting .545 with a homer and two RBI.

In 1,006 games with Toronto, Kansas City, Houston, St. Louis, California, the Chicago White Sox, Cleveland and Seattle, Borders has a .256 average with 67 homers and 326 RBI.

Borders was the starting catcher for Toronto's 1992 and 1993 World Series teams. He batted .450 to win the 1992 World Series MVP and hit safely in 16 straight postseason games over two years, one shy of the all-time mark.
