James spent the last two seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals and was 1-2 with a 5.21 ERA in 40 appearances in 2001.

He has been a workhorse when healthy, but missed two months last season with inflammation in his right rotator cuff. After returning in September, he made just five appearances.

The 34-year-old James went 2-2 with a 3.16 ERA in 51 games in 2000, his first season with the Cardinals. He spent 1995-99 with the Anaheim Angels.

Colorado has 19 pitchers on its 40-man roster and has invited five others -- including James -- with major league experience to spring training.
