Colorado 3, San Jose 1

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Rookie Radim Vrbata and Chris Drury scored power-play goals in the first period and Patrick Roy stopped 22 shots to lead the Colorado Avalanche to a 3-1 victory Saturday night over the San Jose Sharks.

Evgeni Nabokov had blanked Colorado in each of the first two meetings this season and had a shutout streak of nearly 148 minutes against the Avalanche before Vrbata put them ahead for good 6:36 into the contest.

Drury made it 2-0 with 2:16 left in the opening period and defenseman Martin Skoula extended the lead 7:34 into the second. That was more than enough for Roy, who flirted with his league-leading eighth shutout before Patrick Marleau beat him with 13:25 left in the third period.

The goal came while both teams were down a man and followed a roughing penalty on San Jose center Mike Ricci.

Nabokov made 24 saves for the Sharks, who have three losses in the last nine games -- all at home.
