SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- After Joey Harrington sprained his knee, Deonce Whitaker used his legs Saturday to lead the West to a 21-13 win over the East in the annual Shrine Game.
Harrington, the highly touted quarterback from Oregon who is expected to be a high pick in the NFL draft, hurt his knee in the first quarter when he was stepped on during a pass play. He completed just one of five throws for 23 yards before leaving, but the injury was not believed to be serious.
"I turned it the wrong way, so I was done," Harrington said.
Whitaker, who played for nearby San Jose State, scored on a one-yard run in the second quarter and a two-yard run in the fourth to earn Offensive Player of the Game honors.
"I came here to show the style of San Jose State football," the 5-6 Whitaker said. "It was very important for me to show everyone I could play."
On the play before his second touchdown, Whitaker caught a 38-yard pass from J.T. O'Sullivan of Cal-Davis.
Linebacker Erick Rawls of Texas intercepted two passes for the West and was named the game's top defensive player.
Randy Fasini of Stanford saw time at quarterback for the West and threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Donnie O'Neal in the second quarter.
Indiana's Antwaan Randle El was 10 of 21 for 199 yards, but the East quarterback was intercepted twice.
Army tight end Clint Dodson caught a three-yard touchdown pass from Clemson's Woodrow Dantzler in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 14-10.
Chandler's second field goal reduced the margin to one point before Whitaker gave the West an eight-point cushion in the third quarter.
