SUNRISE, Fla., Jan. 12 (UPI) -- The Florida Panthers continued to tinker with their roster Saturday, claiming right wing Pierre Dagenais off waivers from the New Jersey Devils.
An All-Star in the American Hockey League last season, Dagenais was expected to pick up some of the scoring slack after Alexander Mogilny left the Devils as a free agent. But the 6-5 Quebec native had just three goals and three assists in 16 games and spent much of the season back in the AHL.
Dagenais saw limited duty with New Jersey in 2000-01, picking up three goals and two assists in nine games. He was drafted twice by New Jersey, going in the second round in 1996 and in the fourth round two years later.
The 23-year-old Dagenais is not expected to arrive in Florida in time for Saturday night's game against the Washington Capitals.
To clear room on the roster, the Panthers returned center Nick Smith to Saint John of the AHL.
Since Mike Keenan took over as coach on Dec. 3, Florida has added defenseman Darren Van Impe off waivers from the New York Rangers, traded defenseman Dan Boyle to the Tampa Bay Lightning and assigned top prospect Denis Shvidki to the minors.
