EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn., Jan. 11 (UPI) -- After admitting to resume inaccuracies which cost him the coaching job at Notre Dame, George O'Leary has been hired as the defensive line-assistant coach with the Minnesota Vikings.
New Vikings coach Mike Tice, who was named as the permanent replacement on Thursday, played under O'Leary at Central Islip High School in New York in the mid 1970s.
That relationship put O'Leary back into coaching sooner than expected after his reputation took a major hit with the Notre Dame fiasco.
O'Leary left Georgia Tech to take the Notre Dame job on Dec. 8, but quit five days later after the school became incensed with biographical innacuracies about his athletic and academic background. O'Leary admitted claims he played football three years at the University of New Hampshire and earned a master's degree in education from New York University were untrue.
O'Leary served as the defensive line coach for the San Diego Chargers in 1992 and 1993 before returning to Georgia Tech in 1994 as the team's defensive coordinator. He compiled a 52-33 record as the coach at Georgia Tech and led the Yellow Jackets to five bowl appearances.
