Chargers reportedly will fire coach

SAN DIEGO, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- San Diego Chargers coach Mike Riley reportedly will be fired following the team's season finale on Sunday.

Citing league sources "familiar with the situation," ESPN reported Saturday morning that the Chargers could make the move as early as Monday.

San Diego closes its regular season Sunday--a week before the rest of the league--at home against the Seattle Seahawks. The Chargers have a bye in Week 17.

The 2001 season seemed promising for San Diego, which got off to a 5-2 start but has lost eight straight and will miss the playoffs for the sixth straight year.

Riley is just 14-33 in three seasons with the Chargers, going 1-15 in 2000.

ESPN said Riley--the coach at Oregon State from 1997-98 -- has tried to leave the Chargers for college jobs at Southern California and San Diego State, although he has denied the reports.

According to ESPN, possibilities as the Chargers' next coach include Wade Wilson and Ted Cottrell, who have ties to Chargers general manager John Butler from their days with the Buffalo Bills.
