Philadelphia 4, Washington 1

WASHINGTON, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- Ruslan Fedotenko recorded his second career two-goal game against Washington Wednesday night as the Philadelphia Flyers extended their winning streak to a season-high four games with a 4-1 victory.

Rookie Stephen Peat scored his first NHL goal with 4:49 remaining to spoil Roman Cechmanek's shutout bid. It was Washington's first goal in the last three meetings with Philadelphia.

The Flyers climbed into second place in the Atlantic Division, one point behind the first-place New York Rangers. They improved to 11

1 against Southeast Division teams, the only blemish being a 3-3 tie at Atlanta on Oct. 16.

The Capitals are winless in their last last four games (0-3-1) and have faced deficits off at least three goals in each of the last three.

Washington faced a 4-1 deficit in both games of its home-and-home series against Pittsburgh. The Capitals rallied for a 4-4 tie with the Penguins in their last game on Peter Bondra's goal with eight-tenths of a second left in regulation.

But Washington was unable to build on the dramatic finish as the Flyers peppered goaltender Olaf Kolzig with 17 shots in the first period.

Fedotenko opened the scoring with 9:48 left in the period. Defenseman Dan McGillis tallied with 1:55 to go before Keith Primeau and Fedotenko scored 76 seconds apart midway through the second to make it 4-0.
