Philadelphia 6, St. Louis 3

PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Defenseman Kim Johnsson and Mark Recchi sandwiched power-play goals around a shorthanded tally by defenseman Chris Therien Tuesday night as the Philadelphia Flyers rallied for a 6-3 victory over the St. Louis Blues.

The Flyers used a superior special teams effort to storm back from a 3-2 deficit and drop the Blues to 4-39-4 in their last 47 trips to Philadelphia.

Johnsson triggered the comeback with 9:59 left in the second period, wristing a shot from the blue line that glanced off the left leg of St. Louis defenseman Chris Pronger and beat goaltender Brent Johnson to forge a 3-3 tie.

The Flyers killed a 5-on-3 power play but still were down a man when Therien scored his first career shorthanded goal. Johnson made a right pad stop on Simon Gagne's backhander from the right side, but the rebound bounced into the slot, where Therien flipped it past the goalie for his first goal of any kind in 50 games.

Recchi netted his 400th NHL goal with 86 seconds left, extending Philadelphia's lead to 5-3. Less than a minute after St. Louis' Mike Keane was penalized for holding in the attacking zone, Recchi wristed a shot from the bottom of the right faceoff circle that hit defenseman Jeff Finley's skate and deflected past Johnson.

Ruslan Fedotenko added an empty-net goal with nine seconds to play as the Flyers won for just the third time in their last nine home games (3-4-1-1).

Philadelphia killed all eight of St. Louis' power plays, including a pair of 5-on-3 advantages, while going 2-for-4 with the extra man.

Scott Young had a goal and an assist for the Blues, who suffered just their second regulation loss in 11 games (6-2-3-1).
