Bautista staying with Diamondbacks

PHOENIX, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- After hitting .538 with seven RBI in the World Series, outfielder Danny Bautista has decided to stay with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Bautista on Tuesday agreed to terms on a three-year contract, which the Arizona Republic reported to be worth $8 million.

It was believed that Bautista would parlay his World Series performance into a big contract with another team, but he will remain with the defending champions and may become their starting right fielder if Reggie Sanders leaves as a free agent.

Bautista, 29, platooned with Steve Finley in center field for the second half of the 2001 season and batted .302 with five homers and 26 RBI in 100 games. But he is best known for his impact in Arizona's World Series victory over the New York Yankees.

In a 15-2 rout in Game Six, Bautista had five RBI, one shy of former Yankee Bobby Richardson's Series record. He had an RBI double in the decisive 3-2 Game Seven victory.

The Diamondbacks officially offered Bautista arbitration earlier this month, giving them until January 8 to re-sign him.

Also on Tuesday, Arizona named Hall of Famer Robin Yount first base coach. Yount, a Phoenix resident, spent his entire 20-year career with the Milwaukee Brewers.
