HOUSTON, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- Free agent catcher Gregg Zaun, who played in just 39 games for the Kansas City Royals during an injury-plagued 2001 season, signed a two-year contract Saturday with the Houston Astros.
The Astros also signed free agent catcher Scott Servais to a minor league contract and added righthander Doug Brocail to the 40-man roster.
Zaun, 30, spent much of the 2001 campaign on the disabled list after suffering a torn left calf muscle in spring training. When healthy, he batted .320 with six homers and 18 RBI.
Zaun is a career .253 hitter with 26 homers and 114 RBI in a six-year career with the Baltimore Orioles, Florida Marlins and Astros.
Servais, who will attend spring training as a non-roster invitee, spent of the 2001 campaign at Class AAA New Orleans of the Pacific Coast League. He played in just 11 games for the Astros.
