EDMONTON, Alberta, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Defenseman Steve Staios scored 81 seconds into overtime Wednesday night to lift Edmonton to a 3-2 win over the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.
Anson Carter dug the puck out of the corner, cycled to the right faceoff dot and sent a pass to Staios, who had crept behind the Anaheim defense and tapped the puck past goaltender Steve Shields.
Goalie Tommy Salo made 25 saves for the Oilers, but a blunder by defenseman Janne Niinimaa and a goal by Jeff Friesen forced overtime.
Andy McDonald broke out in a two on one with Friesen, but was forced to take a shot when Niinimaa blocked the passing lane. Salo managed to make a pad save, but Niinimaa backed into his teammate, knocking the puck loose. Friesen followed up and tapped home his seventh goal with 8:10 remaining in the second period.
The Ducks opened the scoring 6 1/2 minutes into the game on a goal by Marty Mcinnis, but Scott Ferguson responded for Edmonton 82 seconds later. Mike Comrie gave the Oilers the lead with 4:37 to go in the first period.
Shields finished with 42 saves but fell to 4-10-2.
