INDIANAPOLIS, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- The Indianapolis Colts Wednesday signed kicker Doug Brien as insurance for Mike Vanderjagt's injury.
Vanderjagt strained a muscle in his back during Sunday's 39-27 loss to Baltimore and is questionable for a Monday night matchup with Miami.
Brien had his contract terminated by New Orleans in February. He had been the Saints' kicker since 1995, hitting 130 of 161 field-goal attempts, including a career-best 56-yarder in 1998.
Colts coach Jim Mora had Brien for two years in New Orleans.
Vanderjagt has made 16 of 21 field goals this season. Last year, he was voted to the Pro Bowl after going 25 of 27 and ranking second in the AFC with 121 points.
To make room for Brien, Indianapolis waived defensive back Thomas Smith.
