BOSTON, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- Joe Thornton recorded a goal and an assist in the first period as the Boston Bruins extended their home unbeaten streak against the Tampa Bay Lightning to 15 games Tuesday night with a 6-3 victory.
In 14 career games against Tampa Bay, the former top overall draft pick has 11 goals and seven assists.
Thornton assisted on Sergei Samsonov's goal that opened the scoring 7:46 into the first period and ended Nikolai Khabibulin's shutout streak at 177 minutes, 54 seconds.
Thornton scored his 10th goal with 71 seconds left in the period to give Boston a 2-0 lead.
Boston improved to 13
2 in its last 15 home contests against Tampa Bay. The Bruins' lone home loss to the Lightning came in the teams' first meeting in Boston on April 9, 1994.
Boston also improved the Eastern Conference's best home mark to 10-2
Khabibulin was replaced by Kevin Weekes to start the third period after stopping 16 of 20 shots.
Byron Dafoe made 22 saves for the Bruins, who posted their fifth straight home victory.
Former Bruin Dave Andreychuk's power-play goal pulled the Lightning within 4-2 at 4:31 of the third period, but Bill Guerin restored the three-goal margin just 1:41 later.
