SDSU interviews coaches to replace Tollner

SAN DIEGO, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- San Diego State interviewed its first candidate to replace head football coach Ted Tollner, who resigned earlier this month to assume a new role with the athletic department.

El Camino College coach John Featherstone, who won a junior college national championship in 1987, told the North County Times in Escondido, Calif., that he interviewed for the job on Tuesday with Aztecs athletic director Rick Bay.

Featherstone, 52, played for San Diego State in 1969-70 when Don Coryell was coach, and was an Aztec assistant from 1980-81.

"I still bleed that red-and-black," Featherstone told the Times on Wednesday. "I'd love to have this job. Regardless of the level I'M on now, I have major college coaching experience."

It's believed the Aztecs have about 15 names on their list. Among them are former college coaches Rich Brooks (Oregon), Dick Tomey (Arizona), and Bruce Synder (Arizona State), and current coaches Mike Price (Washington State) and Doug Williams (Grambling).
