Jeff Green gets Busch pole

HOMESTEAD, Fla., Nov. 9 (UPI) -- Somebody finally found a way to stop Ryan Newman's pole-winning assault in the NASCAR Busch Grand National Series.

Jeff Green on Friday was able to deny the rookie his seventh pole of the season, driving a fast lap of 150.939 miles per hour for Saturday's GNC Live Well 300 at Homestead Speedway.

Newman was on the pole with a lap at 150.686 mph before his fellow Ford driver knocked him off.

"I knew that I was going to have to have a quick lap to beat Ryan, and this was a good lap for the Nesquik Ford," Green said. "It drove really well, and I was a little concerned about going back and forth from both cars. I really concentrated on what this car did before I got out of it and then tried to remember that when I got back in it. We did all the right things."

Newman, who will move up to NASCAR Winston Cup full-time next season, has enjoyed an outstanding run in qualifications in the limited Busch Series races he has competed in this year.

"It's the team, not me," he said. "Anybody can drive this race car for two laps in qualifying. It's just a good combination of crew chief, driver and all the guys on the crew. They all do a good job and work real hard, and this is the result.

"Kevin Harvick surprised me in the lap he knocked off. Hopefully we can hold on to it, but it should at least put us in the top five."

Newman was able to regain control of his loose race car when he came out of the fourth turn on his second and final qualification lap.

Greg Biffle put another Ford in the third starting position with a lap at 150.602 mph.
