PATTAYA CITY, Thailand, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Iroda Tulyaganova of Uzbekistan was shocked by Ukraine's Julia Vakulenko in the first round of the $110,000 Volvo Women's Open tennis event Tuesday.
Tulyaganova, a winner of two tournaments this year, was ousted 6-4, 7-6 (7-2), by the 146th-ranked Vakulenko.
The 18-year-old from Ukraine snapped a three-match losing streak and improved her career WTA Tour record to 2-5 in her sixth tournament. Her only other match win was in the first round of the Madrid Open in Spain in May.
Vakulenko's next foe will be qualifier Su-Wei Hsieh of Taipei, who got past Korea's Yoon-Jeong Cho, 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, 6-4.
Three seeded players did advance to the second round as No. 2 Henrieta Nagyova of Slovakia beat Jelena Kostanic of Croatia, 6-4, 0-6, 6-2, No. 5 Tatiana Panova of Russia -- last year's runner-up -- posted a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) victory over countrywoman Evgenia Koulikovskaya, and No. 7 Patty Schnyder of Switzerland topped Emilie Loit of France, 7-5, 6-1.
Also Tuesday, South African qualifier Liezel Huber dispatched Adriana Gersi of the Czech Republic, 6-3, 6-1, Wynne Prakusya of Indonesia cruised past Asa Carlsson of Sweden, 6-3, 6-2, and Japan's Saori Obata eased by Greece's Eleni Daniilidou, 6-2, 6-4.
In addition, Denmark's Eva Dyrberg rallied past Slovakian qualifier Lenka Dlhopolcova, 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-3), and Sandra Kleinova of the Czech Republic defeated Korean qualifier Eun-Ha Kim, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.
