Allen, Bryant players of week

NEW YORK, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- Guards Ray Allen of the Milwaukee Bucks and Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers were named the first Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week for the 2001-02 season Monday.

Allen led the Bucks to a 3-0 record, averaging 31.7 points, 4.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.67 steals. 6.3 rebounds.

Allen enjoyed a pair of 32-point games in wins over Utah and Boston and tied a franchise record with eight 3-pointers in a 102-101 victory at Denver last Thursday.

Bryant opened the season with 29 points in a 98-87 win over Portland on Tuesday and scored 39 in a 105-101 victory at Utah.

Other Eastern Conference candidates for NBA Player of the Week included Jerry Stackhouse of the Detroit Pistons, Jason Kidd of the New Jersey Nets and Grant Hill of the Orlando Magic.

Western Conference candidates included Nick Van Exel of the Denver Nuggets, Elton Brand of the Los Angeles Clippers and Steve Smith of the San Antonio Spurs
