MORGANTOWN, W.Va., Nov. 3 (UPI) -- West Virginia handed the Rugers Scarlet Knights their worst loss in more than a century Saturday, rolling to an 80-7 victory in a Big East Conference contest.
It was Rutgers' worst defeat since an 80-0 setback to Princeton in 1888. The Scarlet Knights' most decisive loss ever came in a 98-0 defeat to Yale in 1883.
"To say the least, we did not play well today," Rutgers coach Greg Schiano said. "We didn't do much of anything well and it shows in the score."
West Virginia (2-5, 1-3 Big East) set a Mountaineer Field record for points, eclipsing the previous mark of 69 against Cincinnati in 1989.
The Mountaineers outgained the Scarlet Knights, 627-177, and set another Mountaineer Field record with 11 touchdowns.
"Our guys played all four quarters," West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez said. "It was time to put a total game together and we did that. We had a total team effort."
Brad Lewis completed nine of 11 passes for 175 yards for West Virginia, which rushed for 446 yards.
The Mountaineers had a pair of runners go over 100 yards. Avon Cobourne rushed for 147 yards and four touchdowns on 19 carries while Quincy Wilson gained 129 yards on just six attempts.
After punting on its first possession, West Virginia scored the next nine times in had the ball to open a 59-0 lead at halftime.
Rutgers committed eight turnovers.
