Wake Forest 34, Virginia 30

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Nov. 3 (UPI) -- James MacPherson threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to Jason Anderson with 1:42 remaining Saturday as the Wake Forest Demon Deacons rallied for a 34-30 victory over the Virginia Cavaliers.

The Cavaliers suffered their fifth straight loss after opening 3-1 and are assured on a losing season under first-year coach Al Groh.

MacPherson had a quiet game, completing 11 of 18 for 188 yards and two interceptions, but he drove Wake Forest 67 yards in just three plays for the winning score.

Anderson's touchdown capped a wild fourth quarter, during which the lead changed hands three times and the teams combined for 35 points.

Wake Forest (4-4, 2-4 ACC) rallied from a 10-point deficit to take a 27-23 lead on Fabian Davis' 62-yard punt return with 11:17 remaining.

Virginia (3-6, 2-5) grabbed a 30-27 lead on Bryson Spinner's eight-yard pass to Alvin Pearman with 3:03 left.

Fred Staton rushed for 151 yards on 28 carries for the Demon Deacons while Anderson caught five passes for 150 yards.

Spinner completed 18 of 32 for 193 yards in relief of Matt Schaub, who was nine of 13 for 101 yards. Pearman ran for 108 yards on 19 carries.
