TUSCALOOSA, Ala., Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Josh Reed set Southeastern Conference records with 19 receptions for 293 yards Saturday night as Louisiana State improved its bowl hopes with a 35-21 victory over Alabama.
Despite the impressive numbers, LSU (5-3, 3-3 SEC West) was in a struggle and did not take the lead for good until Reed's 25-yard touchdown reception snapped a 21-21 tie with four seconds left in the third period.
Rohan Davey completed 35 of 44 passes for 528 yards, matching the second-highest total in SEC history.
Georgia's Eric Zeier passed for 544 yards against Southern Mississippi in 1993 and Kentucky's Jared Lorenzen threw for 528 yards last year against Georgia.
LSU opened a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on LaBrandon Toefield's three-yard run and Davey's 34-yard touchdown pass to Jerel Myers.
But Alabama (3-5, 2-4) battled back to tie the contest, 21-21, on Tyler Watts' 22-yard run with with 3:38 remaining in the third period.
Toefield gave LSU some breathing room by scoring on a six-yard scamper with seven minutes to play.
The Tigers rushed for only 83 yards, but outgained Alabama, 611 yards to 383.
Watts completed 13 of 22 passes for 165 yards and also rushed for 86 yards on 21 carries for the Crimson Tide, who suffered their third straight loss.
LSU rebounded from last week's 35-24 loss to Mississippi.
