Vancouver 4, Montreal 0

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Dan Cloutier stopped 17 shots for his second shutout of the season Thursday night and the Vancouver Canucks scored three power-play goals en route to a 4-0 victory over the struggling Montreal Canadiens.

Cloutier was barely challenged by the anemic Canadiens offense. He turned away five shots in the first period, four in the second and eight in the third to record his third career shutout.

The Canucks, who scored twice on the power play in Tuesday's win over Columbus, capitalized on three of their five opportunities with the man advantage.

Trent Klatt opened the scoring for Vancouver on its second power play with 4:41 left in the first period. A shot from Markus Nasland grazed Klatt, hit the post, bounced off the back of Montreal goaltender Mathieu Garon and trickled into the net.

Herbert Vasiljevs added another power-play goal in the second period and rookie Justin Kurtz scored his second power-play goal in as many games with 5:13 left in the game.

The Canucks had been just three for 36 with the man advantage at GM Place. Montreal had surrendered only four power-play goals in 53 shorthanded opportunities, the second best penalty-killing unit in the NHL.

Vancouver's only even-strength goal came with 8:15 left in the final period by Denis Pederson, who had not tallied since Feb. 28.

Vancouver's Markus Naslund extended his point streak to five games with his assist on Klatt's goal and Henrik Sedin snapped a nine-game pointless streak with a pair of assists.

The Canadiens have lost three straight and are 1-6

0 in their last seven games. They have been outscored, 22-5, during that stretch.
