Ricky Williams earns NFC honors

NEW YORK, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- New Orleans Saints running back Ricky Williams and New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan were named Thursday the NFC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Month for October.

Saints kicker John Carney earned earned Special Teams honors.

Williams totaled 568 yards from scrimmage, averaging 4.7 yards per touch, in the month. He helped the Saints post a 3-1 record, rushing for 411 yards and two touchdown on 99 carries and catching 22 passes for 157 yards. It was Williams' first career Player of the Month award.

Strahan recorded 9.5 sacks and 18 tackles for the defending NFC champions, who have lost three straight to fall to 3-4. He also earned his first monthly honor.

Carney scored 48 points in four games, converting 14 of 15 field goals and all six of his extra points. He twice had five field goals in a game to tie a Saints' record.

Carney claimed his fourth Player of the Month award and first since September 1996 as a member of the San Diego Chargers.
