Cel;tics sign Strickland

BOSTON, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- The Boston Celtics signed free agent guard Erick Strickland Thursday and placed rookie guard Joseph Forte on the injured list with lower back spasms.

Terms were not disclosed for Strickland, who has played for the Dallas Mavericks, New York Knicks and Vancouver Grizzlies. As a five-year veteran, he must be paid no less than $653,650.

After a stint in the CBA, Strickland signed with Dallas as a free agent prior to the start of the 1996-97 season and spent four years with the Mavericks.

His best season came in 1999-2000, when averaged 12.8 points and 4.8 rebounds in 68 games.

Strickland was traded to the Knicks prior to the start of last season and later dealt to the Grizzlies for Othella Harrington. He played in 50 games for New York and Vancouver, averaging 5.2 points and 2.6 rebounds.

Forte, the Celtics' third first-round pick in the 2001 draft, played 13 minutes in Boston's opener Tuesday, scoring two points in a 108-89 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

He did not play in Wednesday's 95-92 loss to the New Jersey Nets.
