Ryan Smyth also scored for the Oilers, who lead the Northwest Division at 9-4-1 and are second in the Western Conference with 19 points.

Brian Savage scored his sixth goal for the Canadiens, who had won six of their previous seven visits to Skyreach Centre before losing for the fifth time in six games overall.

Rookie Olivier Michaud was impressive in his NHL debut, stopping all 14 shots in the third period in place of starter Mathieu Garon.

At 18 years, 1 month and 17 days, Michaud became the youngest goalie in the history of Montreal's storied franchise. He was an emergency recall from juniors when Jeff Hackett and Jose Theodore went down with injuries.
