Retief Goosen leads in Madrid

MADRID, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- Retief Goosen stayed on course to capture his third title of the season and the No. 1 spot on Europe's money list as well Saturday by moving two shots in front after three rounds of the Telefonica Open de Madrid.

The South African, who won the U.S. Open Championship and the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond, shot a 5-under 66 for a 17-under total of 196. Tied for second at 198 were Steve Webster of England, Spain's Diego Borrego and Irishman David Higgins.

Webster, who carded a 68 for a total of 198, is aiming to win his first European Tour title after several close calls. Higgins, the halfway leader, started the week in 128th position on the money list and knows that a top 10 will safeguard his playing rights for 2002. He shot a 69 Saturday.

Borrego, who began the week 139 places below Goosen and in imminent danger of losing his card, shot day's best 64 to set up the prospect of a major rescue act on the last day. The Spaniard, encouraged by the vocal home support, needs to finish in the top five to be assured of his card.

Goosen, though, is in command. The South African birdied the second and fourth and then picked up three straight birdies beginning at the eighth.

A victory would ensure Goosen would finish No. 1 in the chase for the money title. Only Darren Clarke can overtake Goosen.
