HONOLULU, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- Fresno State's hopes of playing a game in January may have ended because of a pair of Friday contests.
Nick Rolovich threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Ashley Lelie with 13 seconds to play as Hawaii stunned 19th-ranked Fresno State, 38-34, in a Western Athletic Conference contest Friday.
Rolovich, making his fourth straight start, lobbed a pass to the right corner, where Lelie out leaped cornerback Devon Banks and pulled down the pass, coming down with one foot in bounds.
Fresno State was stopped inside its own 20-yard line on the ensuing kickoff and David Carr completed one pass near midfield as time expired.
Lelie had nine receptions for 122 yards and three touchdowns as Hawaii (5-2, 4-2 WAC) defeated a ranked team for the first time since a 59-28 victory over No. 4 Brigham Young on Dec. 1, 1990.
Rolovich completed 29-of-52 passes for 348 yards and three touchdowns as the Warriors won their fourth straight game.
Carr was 28-of-45 for 400 yards and four TDs for the Bulldogs (6-2, 2-2). Rodney Wright and Bernard Berrian each caught nine passes.
Hawaii took its first lead of the game with 5:50 to go in the fourth quarter when Lelie out jumped safety Bryce McGill for an 11-yard TD to make it 34-31.
Fresno State regained the lead 55 seconds later when Carr, who has seven come-from-behind wins in the last two seasons, found Wright up the left sideline for a 35-yard touchdown.
Fresno State was No. 10 last week but had its remote chance at a national championship end with a 35-30 home loss to Boise State.
The Bulldogs posted early-season upsets of Colorado, Oregon State and Wisconsin, but now are behind four teams in the WAC standings. They have not played a January bowl game since 1941 -- a 13-12 loss to Drake in the Raisin Bowl.
Hawaii limited running back Paris Gaines to 46 yards on 19 carries and the Bulldogs committed 13 penalties for 118 yards. The Warriors also recovered two of Fresno State's four fumbles and intercepted Carr once.
Fresno State scored on its first possession of the game as Carr hooked up with Charles Smith for an eight-yard touchdown 2:11 into the game. Asen Asparuhov kicked a 35-yard field goal to push the lead to 10-0 with 4:49 left in the first quarter.
Justin Ayat kicked a 23-yard field goal with 97 seconds left in the opening quarter to pull the Warriors within 10-3. Ayat booted a 35-yard field 1:57 into the second quarter.
Carr capped a six-play, 71-yard drive with a 27-yard pass to Smith to give the Bulldogs a 17-6 lead with 10:11 left in the second.
Lelie's three-yard TD reception cut the deficit to 17-13 with just under six minutes left in the first half. Asparuhov kicked a 35-yard field goal as time expired.
David Shabaglian pulled down a 10-yard pass from Carr, giving the Bulldogs a 27-13 advantage with 8:14 to go in the third.
Ayat capped an 11-play, 65-yard drive with a 27-yard field goal to pull Hawaii within 27-16 with 2:45 remaining in the third.
Rolovich directed a pair of long drives in the fourth quarter. Channon Harris caught a 19-yard pass to cut the deficit to 27-24 with 11:44 left. Lelie's 11-yard catch capped an eight-play, 96-yard drive that began after cornerback Nate Jackson recovered Carr's fumble.
