MINNEAPOLIS, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Kevin Garnett had 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists and Chauncey Billpus scored his team's final seven points as the Minnesota Timberwolves held off a late rally Monday night en route to a 91-84 victory over the Miami Heat.
Garnett made 8-of-16 shots from the floor--including a rare 3-pointer--and drained 3-of-6 free throws. He scored 11 points in the second half as Minnesota turned a halftime tie into a 76-64 lead just 49 seconds in the fourth quarter.
Miami went on a 17-8 run to close within three with 4:14 left, but Billups nailed a jumper and sank five free throws in the final 1:27 to seal the victory.
Billups finished with 17 points in 22 minutes. He made just 3-of-8 shots from the floor but sank 10-of-11 from the line.
Smith scored 10 points on 6-of-10 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds. Wally Szczerbiak added 10 points and Terrell Brandon had 10 and five assists.
Second-round pick Loren Woods made just 2-of-6 shots but had seven points and six rebounds in 24 minutes.
Alonzo Mourning had 20 points, seven rebounds and three blocks for Miami. Sam Mack scored 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting and LaPhonso Ellis had 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Rookie Tang Hamilton chipped in 11 points and Eddie House had 10 points and six assists, despite making just 3-of-10 shots.
