Minnesota 28, Michigan St. 19

MINNEAPOLIS, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Marion Barber ran for 158 yards and two scores Saturday as Minnesota wore down Michigan State for a 28-19 Big Ten Conference victory.

Tellis Redmon added 134 yards on 22 carries and a score for the Golden Gophers (1-5, 0-4), who collected 322 of their 446 total yards on the ground to snap a three-game losing streak.

The Spartans (3-2, 1-2) took their final lead of the game at 17-14 when Jeff Smoker threw an 18-yard pass to Charles Rogers midway through the third quarter.

The Golden Gophers answered with a 12-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a six-yard run by Redmon midway through the final period.

Michigan State turned the ball over on downs near midfield when Smoker threw an incomplete pass to Herb Haygood. Minnesota capitalized and put away the game on Asad Abdul-Khaliq's 39-yard pass to Barber, who also scored on a 40-yard run in the first half that tied the game, 7-7.

Smoker completed 21 of 33 passes for 258 yards and two scores. He opened the scoring with a five-yard pass to Chris Baker.

Asad Abdul-Khaliq completed 11 of 23 passes for 124 yards, including a four-yard touchdown pass to Ron Johnson in the second quarter that put the Gophers ahead, 14-10.
