ZURICH, Switzerland, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Anna Kournikova's first career victory will not come at the 2001 Swisscom Challenge.
The Russian teenager was beaten in the first round off the $1.19 million event on Tuesday, falling to South Africa's Amanda Coetzer, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3.
Kournikova, who has battled a foot injury this year and was forced to miss the U.S. Open in August, has lost six straight matches.
As for the diminutive Coetzer, she heads to a marquee second-round match on Wednesday with third-seeded American Lindsday Davenport, already the winner of five singles titles this year.
Coetzer, 29, is making her sixth consecutive appearance in Zurich. Her best result was 1998, when she reached the quarterfinals before falling to eventual champion Davenport.
The only two seeds in action on Tuesday were eliminated from the tournament. No. 6 Meghann Shaughnessy of the United States was beaten by Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova, 6-3, 6-4, and Swiss qualifier Marie-Giane Mikaelian defeated No. 7 Elena Dementieva of Russian, 6-2, 6-4.
Also, American Lisa Raymond defeated countrywoman Alexandra Stevenson, 7-6 (7-4, 6-3; Russia's Tatiana Panova beat Janette Husarova of Slovakia, 6-4, 6-2, and France's Iva Majoli eliminated Spain's Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.
