NASCAR race postponed by rain

MARTINSVILLE, Va., Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Rain Sunday forced the NASCAR Winston Cup Old Dominion 500 to be postponed until Monday. Officials said the race would begin at 11 a.m. EDT.

Todd Bodine in a Ford Taurus won the pole, which he earned Friday with a lap of 93.724 miles per hour around the .526-mile flat oval. It was his third pole of the season and fourth of his career.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start on the outside of the first row with his best short-track qualifying effort at 93.617 mph in a Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

Jeff Gordon, who has a 237-point lead over Ricky Rudd in the Winston Cup points standings with seven races remaining, was third at 93.488 mph in a Chevrolet. Gordon won this race in 1996 and 1999.
