Jaguar suspension expanded

NEW YORK, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver R. Jay Soward was suspended an additional six games by the NFL on Wednesday for a second violation of the league's substance abuse policy.

According to reports, Soward received the additional suspension for missing a scheduled drug test, which the league views as a failed test.

Soward, the Jaguars' top pick in the 2000 draft, had just completed a four-game suspension that was handed down before the start of the season.

The second suspension means he will not be eligible to return until November 26, the day after the Jaguars' 10th game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Jacksonville coach Tom Coughlin told the Florida Times Union that Soward is jeopardizing his career.

"R. Jay needs to get his life together," Coughlin said. "I've known about it, so it's not a shock to me. Obviously, he's a young man with outstanding talent, but he also has a cross to bear. For him to ever play again, he's got to do something about it."

Soward was a disciplinary problem for the Jaguars as a rookie last season as he was late to practice on numerous occasions. He was suspended by the team for the Arizona game on December 10 and then placed on the reserve/non-football illness list for treatment of an unspecified ailment.

Soward played in 13 games for the Jaguars last year, recording 14 receptions for 154 yards and a touchdown. He also spent time on special teams returning kickoffs and punts.
