Mariners get even against Indians
SEATTLE, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Mike Cameron and Edgar Martinez delivered two-run homers in the first inning today, after which the Seattle Mariners turned things over to Jamie Moyer and the bullpen to even their American League Division Series with a 5-1 win over the Cleveland Indians.
After equaling the all-time record for victories in a major league season with 116, Seattle found itself facing a must-win situation after dropping the series opener Tuesday.
The Mariners responded by scoring all their runs on homers and Moyer continued the form he displayed during the latter part of the season to send the series to Cleveland deadlocked at 1-1.
Game 3 in the best-of-five series will be played Saturday.
Chuck Finley made the start for Cleveland, his first playoff appearance since he was a rookie with the Anaheim Angels 15 years ago.
Finley walked Ichiro Suzuki to open the Seattle first and Cameron then sent an 0-2 pitch into the left-field seats. Bret Boone followed with a sharp single up the middle and Martinez crushed the first pitch he saw over the center-field wall.
Staked to a quick lead, Moyer did not allow a hit until the fourth and went six plus innings before being removed when Ellis Burks and Jim Thome opened the seventh with singles.
Jeff Nelson came on and walked Travis Fryman to load the bases with none out. But Marty Cordova grounded into a double play, on which Buerks scored, and Einar Diaz flew out to center to end the inning and the Indians' final threat.
Seattle's fifth run came on a leadoff homer by David Bell in the fifth.
The New York Yankees will try to do what the Mariners did when they host the Oakland Athletics tonight in Game 2 of their series.
Andy Pettitte drew the starting assignment as the Yankees attempt to bounce back from a series opening loss. Oakland won 64 of its last 92 games en route to a wild-card berth and defeated the Yankees in the first game, 5-3.
USA tries to qualify for 2002 Davis Cup
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., Oct. 11 (UPI) -- The United States' quest for a record 32nd Davis Cup title begins Friday against India.
Youngsters Andy Roddick and James Blake lead the Americans into Joel Coliseum for a qualifying round encounter that was supposed to be held Sept. 21-23, but was postponed after the terrorist attacks.
The unheralded American squad, which includes the doubles team of Don Johnson and Jared Palmer, will be trying to help its country in the first step of a long process.
The first step to the 2002 Davis Cup title begins Friday with a pair of singles matches. There is a doubles match Saturday and the singles matchups are reversed Sunday.
The United States was relegated to the qualifying round early this year after losing to Switzerland in a World Group first-round tie. Australia and France will meet later this year for the 2001 title.
A loss to India will keep the Americans out of the World Group, preventing them from competing for the Davis Cup next year and dropping them into a qualifying zone for 2003. It also would push their title drought to seven years.
Lehman equals PGA Tour record
LAS VEGAS, Nev., Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Six weeks after one of the most disappointing moments of his career, Tom Lehman matched the PGA Tour's 36-hole scoring record today to take the lead at the Invensys Classic.
Lehman shot a bogey-free, 10-under-par 62 to reach 19-under 125 at a five-round event that has also featured a sudden resurgence by Fred Couples and continued outstanding play by John Daly.
Lehman's 36-hole total tied the tour record set by Tiger Woods at the 2000 NEC Invitational.
Couples, winless since 1998, added a 64 to his opening round 63, but had to settle for second place at 127. Couples played the TPC at the Canyons on Thursday in the event's three-course rotation. That course is a par 71 while the other two courses played in the tournament have a par of 72.
Daly also played the Canyons and shot a 62 to put himself alone in third at 129. Daly has three top-four finishes during the last five weeks, including a victory at the European Tour's BMW International.
"The expectations were high coming in here," said Lehman, who is winless since January 2000 and has missed three straight cuts. "The clubs feel comfortable in my hands."
Lehman's disappointing season includes a snub from United States Ryder Cup captain Curtis Strange, who instead chose Paul Azinger and Scott Verplank for the 12-man team.
This is Lehman's first appearance since.
WTA event canceled
STAMFORD, Conn., Oct. 11 (UPI) -- The WTA Tour announced today it had canceled an upcoming tournament in Indonesia due to an escalation of political unrest in the area in the wake of the United States' military action in Afghanistan.
The WTA took the action to ensure the safety of its players after consulting with its security experts.
The tournament, scheduled to begin on Oct. 29 in Surabaya, will remain on the WTA calendar for next year.
"It was a painful decision because of steps taken by the tournament staff and their sponsors to ensure a terrific event," WTA CEO Bart McGuire said. "However, with the increased instability in the area, we decided, together with tournament management and our security experts, that the event had to be canceled as a precautionary measure."
Bruins defenseman sidelined
BOSTON, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Boston Bruins defenseman Kyle McLaren will be sidelined indefinitely after an MRI revealed a torn pectoral muscle.
McLaren suffered the injury when he delivered a crunching body check to Washington center Jeff Halpern with five minutes left in the second period of Monday's game while trying to get to the puck to break up an icing call.
McLaren, who registered one assist in Boston's first three games, missed the third period with what the Bruins described as a bruised chest muscle. But an MRI on Wednesday night revealed the tear.
McLaren did not play in Wednesday's 2-1 loss at Minnesota that snapped the Bruins' season-opening three-game winning streak.
Cubs promite Jim Hendry
CHICAGO, Oct. 11 UPI) -- Jim Hendry, who has been the Chicago Cubs' assistant general manager since August 2000, was promoted today to vice president of player personnel.
In his seventh year in the organization, the 46-year-old Hendry joined the Cubs in November 1994 as director of player development. After one year, he took over as the club's scouting director.
In his new role, Hendry will be involved in the day-to-day operations of the team and oversee the minor league and scouting departments.
Prior to working for the Cubs, he spent three years in the Florida Marlins' organization as a special assistant to general manager Dave Dombrowski.
