BOISE, Idaho, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Rookie Gerald Wallace scored 17 points as the Sacramento Kings opened their exhibition season with a 101-95 victory over the Utah Jazz.
The 6-7, 215-pound Wallace started at forward alongside Chris Webber and made 5-of-8 shots and 7-of-8 free throws in 23 minutes. The 19-year-old newcomer figures to play small forward and shooting guard, the same position played by Peja Stojakovic and Hedo Turkoglu. The Kings led the NBA in scoring last season behind Webber, who had 11 points in 19 minutes in this one.
Mike Bibby scored 15 points and Scott Pollard added 14 for the Kings, who had a 46-24 advantage in points in the paint.
Rusty LaRue scored 16 points and Bryon Russell added 15 for the Jazz, who used 17 players, including newcomers John Amaechi and Andrei Kirilenko, who scored seven points each. Karl Malone added seven points to the Utah cause and John Stockton had nine.
