Minnesota 2, Boston 1

ST. PAUL, Minn., Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Stacy Roest scored his second goal of the game with 3:22 left and Manny Fernandez made a key late save Wednesday night as the Minnesota Wild remained unbeaten with a 2-1 victory over the Boston Bruins.

Coming off his second straight seven-goal campaign, Roest got his third of the season to break a 1-1 tie. Former Bruin Antti Laaksonen was the first to reach a dump-in along the left boards and whipped a pass into the slot for Roest, whose wrist shot beat goaltender Byron Dafoe to the glove side.

Minnesota nearly squandered the lead with just over a minute left when defenseman Filip Kuba's clearing attempt was intercepted, leaving two Bruins alone in front of the net. But Fernandez extended his left leg and got his skate on Brian Rolston's backhander.

Fernandez also held on during a late scramble and finished with 35 saves for his second straight win.

The Wild (2

1) opened their inaugural season with a five-game winless streak and needed 11 games to record two victories. But they remained one of five unbeaten teams in 2001-02.

Martin Lapointe scored the lone goal for Boston, which was trying for its first 4

0 start since 1990-91. But the Bruins were without their top two scorers from last season as center Jason Allison continues his holdout and right wing Bill Guerin served the second of a three-game NHL suspension.
