Regier signs six-year extension

BUFFALO, N.Y., Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Buffalo Sabres general manager Darcy Regier, a driving force behind the success of the franchise, on Saturday signed a six-year contract extension.

Since joining the Sabres in 1997, Regier has built Buffalo into one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference.During his tenure, the Sabres have made the playoffs each season, advancing the Stanley Cup Finals in 1999 and the Eastern Conference finals in 1998.

"His leadership and vision have already brought great benefits to the team and fans of Western New York and Southern Ontario," Sabres chairman of the board John Rigas said.

"This long-term agreement will provide our organization with the stability and consistency it needs while striving to give fans exciting teams that can make a serious quest for the coveted Stanley Cup."

Regier made the biggest deal of his tenure with the club this past offseason, when he traded six-time Vezina Trophy winner Dominik Hasek to the Detroit Red Wings.

Also this past offseason, Regier traded former team captain Michael Peca, who sat out last season in a contract squabble, to the New York Islanders.

Prior to joining the Sabres, Regier served in roles with the Islanders as director of hockey administration, assistant coach and assistant general manager.
