The Sultan of Stroll?
HOUSTON, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- Barry Bonds has a major league record, but it's not the one he was after. Now, they're beginning to call him the Sultan of Stroll.
Houston walked the Giants slugger three times Wednesday night giving him 173 walks this season, two more than Babe Ruth had in setting the record in 1923. The two teams went at it again Thursday night with Bonds, still just one home run behind Mark McGwire's record 70, hoping he'll get something to hit.
Five day games were on tap in the National League. Montreal was at Florida, St. Louis at Milwaukee, Cincinnati at the Chicago Cubs, Colorado at Arizona and Los Angeles at San Diego. . The night lineup included San Francisco at Houston and Philadelphia at Atlanta.
There were two day games in the American League: Minnesota at Detroit and Cleveland at Kansas City. Night games had Boston at Baltimore, the New York Yankees at Tampa Bay, Oakland at Anaheim and Texas at Seattle.
Eyes on Texas, OU
DALLAS, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- The eyes of Texas, as well as much of the college football world, will be on the Cotton Bowl in Dallas this weekend.
In the season's first matchup of top five teams, fifth-ranked Texas meets No. 3 Oklahoma Saturday in the Red River Shootout, a legendary heated rivalry that has reached a fever pitch.
Both teams are 4-0, marking the first time since 1985 that each enters the game with a perfect record. Further, the Sooners are the defending national champs and have a 17-game winning streak going. But, Texas has a score to settle.
Oklahoma emerged as a national title contender by routing Texas, 63-14, last season as running back Quentin Griffin scored six touchdowns. Afterwards, the Sooners poured salt in the wound by
taking an impromtu team picture on the field with their Longhorn fingers pointing downward.
Fans at the Cotton Bowl are divided equally for both schools, but second-ranked Florida can expect no such support when it visits No. 20 Louisiana State in Saturday's only other matchup between ranked teams.
Browns' rookie fined for Brunell hit
NEW YORK, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- The National Football League fined Cleveland Browns rookie defensive tackle Gerard Warren $35,000 Thursday for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Mark Brunell in last Sunday's game.
The incident occurred when Browns defensive lineman Orpheus Roye intercepted a shovel pass on Jacksonville's first play from scrimmage. Warren turned to block, took several steps to Brunell and leveled him with a high hit as the players' helmets collided.
Brunell suffered a concussion on the play and did not return. Afterwards, he called it "a dirty hit."
Warren, the third overall pick in the 2001 draft, was not penalized on the play and denied any intent to injure Brunell.
Malone, two coaches in hall of fame
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Oct. 4 (UPI) -- NBA star Moses Malone and legendary college coaches Mike Krzyzewski and John Chaney will be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Friday.
Malone and Krzyzewski were elected May 30 on their first ballot by the
honors committee. This was Chaney's third year being reviewed by the North American screening committee and his first by the honors committee.
A three-time NBA Most Valuable Player and 12-time All-Star center, Malone ranks fifth all-time with 27,409 points and 16,212 rebounds. He teamed with Hall of Famer Julius Erving to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to the 1983 NBA championship.
Krzyzewski led Duke to its third national championship in 2001, tying him for third all-time with Hall of Famer Bob Knight. He also guided the Blue Devils to titles in 1991 and 1992 and has led them to nine Final Four appearances.
Despite never reaching the Final Four, Chaney brought prominence back to Temple, leading the Owls to 17 NCAA Tournament appearances and five trips to the regional finals in his 19 years at the school.
Toms defends title
WILLIAMSBURG, Va., Oct. 4 (UPI) -- David Toms opened defense of his Michelob Championship Thursday at the Kingsmill Resort's River Course where he has won three times this year.
The field for the 34th Michelob included five U.S. Ryder Cup team members -- Toms, David Duval, Jim Furyk, Paul Azinger and Scott Hoch.
Ty Tryon, 17, also is entered as a professional for the first time, missing a few days of high school after receiving a sponsor's exemption. He competed in a pair of PGA Tour events this season as an amateur.
While Duval has won twice at Kingsmill, Toms is the defending champion, having defeated Canadian Mike Weir on the first playoff hole last season.
Toms, who is ranked ninth in the world, continued his winning ways this year at the Compaq Classic and added a dramatic victory at the PGA Championship to his resume.
Sorenstam, Pak continue duel
VALLEJO, Calif., Oct.4 (UPI) -- Twenty of the best women golfers
in the world are together this week for the Samsung World Championship. But most eyes are on just two of them.
Annika Sorenstam of Sweden and Korea's Se Ri Pak continue their race for Player of the Year honors and the money title when the exclusive event gets under way Thursday at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club.
Sorenstam, a three-time Player of the Year, has won a tour-high six titles and a career-best $1,666,306 this season.
Pak is coming off her fifth win of the year, an impressive five-shot victory at the AFLAC Champions event in Alabama. The triumph boosted her earnings to $1,451,509, good for second on the tour.
Defending champion Juli Inkster also is back, along with all but two of the top 20 money winners on the LPGA Tour this season. Inkster matched the tournament scoring record last year with a 14-under-par 274.
PGA opens its "Aloha Season"
KAHUKU, Hawaii, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- The Turtle Bay Seniors Championship begins the "Aloha Season" Friday on the PGA Tour, an official marketing relationship between the Tour and the state of Hawaii.
In January, the Hawaii Tourism Authority began the relationship, which combines six individual tour-related events held in Hawaii to serve as the cornerstone of the state's $1 billion golf industry.
The Turtle Bay Championship at the Arnold Palmer Course on the island of Oahu is one of only three tournaments remaining for players seeking berths in the season-ending Senior Tour
Championship at Gaillardia -- which is where the Charles Schwab Cup concludes.
Allen Doyle is in the lead and Bruce Fleisher is the closest pursuer in the Schwab Cup standings. Larry Nelson, Hale Irwin and Gil Morgan round out the top five in the standings.
Irwin won this Senior Tour event on the island of Maui last October when it was known as the Kaanapali Classic with a15-under-par 198.
