BALTIMORE, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- The Baltimore Orioles Wednesday acquired aging outfielder Tim Raines with the intent of playing him alongside his son, Tim Jr.
The father and son played against each other in a spring training game in March and in a minor league game last month. They are expected to become just the second father and son to play in a major league game, joining the Ken Griffey and Ken Griffey, Jr.
The elder Raines, 42, was acquired from the Montreal Expos for a player to be named, one day after his son collected his first major league hit and run in a 4-3 win over Toronto.
Tim Raines Sr., who suffers from lupus, is in his 22nd season. He is fifth on the all-time list with 808 steals and has a .295 average, 2,585 hits, 427 doubles, 113 triples, 168 home runs and 968 RBI in 2,400 games.
This season, the senior Raines batted .304 (24-for-78) with four RBI for the Expos.
The younger Raines, 22, had his contract purchased from Class AAA Rochester of the International League on Monday. He faced his father March 6, when the Orioles played the Expos in an exhibition game in West Palm Beach, Fla., and again on Aug. 21, when Rochester visited Ottawa -- Montreal's Class AAA affiliate.
In 1990 and 1991, Ken Griffey Jr. and Sr. both played for the Seattle Mariners. The tandem now is with the Cincinnati Reds with the son playing center field and the father serving as hitting coach.
Outfielder Mike Kinkade, who has an injured right wrist, was placed on the 60-day disabled list to make roster room for Raines.
