Roddick, Martin named for Davis Cup

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Oct. 2 (UPI) -- Andy Roddick and Todd Martin have been named the singles players for the United States Davis Cup qualifying tie against India scheduled for October 12-14 in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The announcement was made by new Davis Cup coach Patrick McEnroe, who is succeeding his brother, John. Don Johnson and Jared Palmer will play doubles for the United States at the Lawrence-Joel Coliseum on the campus of Wake Forest University.

However, McEnroe still can change his roster before the event. Other players still in contention for spots are James Blake and Robby Ginepri, both of whom will be part of the traveling squad to Winston-Salem.

"The naming of these four players is a technicality at this point," McEnroe said. "I will chose the four competitors by one hour before next Thursday's draw ceremony, as dictated by the rules of the ITF (International Tennis Federation)."

Roddick ended last year as the top-ranked junior, and has carried over that success to the ATP, winning three titles this year and reaching his first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the U.S. Open. The 19-year-old was the youngest male to reach the U.S. Open quarterfinals since Andre Agassi in 1988.

In February, Roddick made his Davis Cup debut and won his dead rubber as the U.S. lost to Switzerland, 3-2, at Basel. The defeat spoiled McEnroe's debut as captain after taking over from brother John, who resigned after only one year at the helm.

Martin, 31, has played Davis Cup every year since 1994, when he made his debut against India in a first-round tie. He is 14-14 lifetime in Davis Cup play, including 11-8 in singles, but has battled injuries this year.

Johnson and Palmer captured the Wimbledon doubles title and have reached the U.S. Open doubles final. The 33-year-old Johnson will be making his Davis Cup debut and Palmer has been a member of three U.S. teams.
